WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born near the beautiful mountains of Utah and live here with my husband, two daughters, and two cats.

WHERE DID YOU STUDY?

I studied for a BFA in Illustration at Utah Valley University before stepping away to self-supplement my own art education through various online and local courses.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE?

I work almost exclusively digitally on the Procreate app on a 12.5” iPad Pro. I also work with gouache and prisma-color pencils during my sketching and studies to help keep my digital work loose.

WHAT IS YOUR BOOK PROCESS LIKE?

Personally I sketch all my dummies in pencil on loose sheets, scan in to Procreate, adjust, then lay out using Procreate, adding the text.

CAN YOU ILLUSTRATE MY BOOK?

I’m afraid I don’t take on self-published projects. All serious inquiries can be sent to baileykateillustrates@gmail.com.

DO YOU DO COMMISSIONS?

Thank you for your interest and your support! Unfortunately, since I am working full-time on my books and personal projects, I’m not taking on commissions at this time.

WHAT ARE YOU PRICES?

Since I am not taking on commissions, I cannot share a price list.

CAN YOU WORK ON THIS PROJECT FOR EXPOSURE?

Like most professions, I prefer to be paid for the work I do! :)

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE?

While style is always changing, I started focusing on my art fundamentals and worked to improve my drawing skills in anatomy, perspective, color/light, and composition. Once you’ve mastered the basics, eventually your style develops as you’re influenced by art styles you like. You’ll also begin to create shorthand ‘symbols’ for objects the way you perceive them rather than the way they look in reality (which is what style is!). Style can change over time, or even adapt from project to project.

WHO ARE YOUR GREATEST INFLUENCES?

This list changes all the time! Eyvind Earle, Mary Blaire and Martin and Alice Provensen are my greatest influences. I am also ever-inspired, by many contemporary illustrators! To name just a few would be Carson Ellis, Rebecca Green and Lisa Congdon.
